Fujitsu on Brand vs Demand: Why Buyers Remember

At a recent Enterprise roundtable hosted by True and Andrea Clatworthy, Head of Europe Marketing Transformation at Fujitsu, we asked a room of senior B2B marketers how to influence buyers who are increasingly hard to reach.

One of the most interesting takeaways wasn’t about AI. It was about memory.

Your buyers aren’t buying today

For years, B2B marketers have been obsessed with lead generation – pipeline, MQLs, intent signals, conversion rates. And while those things matter, they only tell part of the story.

Enterprise buying cycles are long. By the time a prospect enters the market, they’ve often already formed opinions about the brands they trust. They’re not starting from scratch – they’re drawing from memory.

That means one question matters more than we often give it credit for: will your brand be one of the first they think of?

Emotion isn’t the enemy of B2B

That question sparked a discussion around the role of emotion in B2B decision-making. Despite what we often tell ourselves, people don’t make business decisions on logic alone. They justify decisions with rational proof, but they’re influenced by trust, familiarity and confidence.

Emotion isn’t about making B2B advertising dramatic or sentimental. It’s about creating something distinctive enough to be remembered.

Marketing is doing more of the work, earlier

The conversation also challenged how we think about the buying journey. Marketing isn’t just responsible for generating awareness anymore. Today’s marketers are helping buyers build internal business cases, justify investment, demonstrate ROI and create consensus across increasingly complex buying groups.

In many organisations, marketing is doing much of this work before sales are even invited into the conversation.

AI augments, it doesn’t replace

Of course, AI inevitably entered the discussion. The overwhelming view wasn’t that AI replaces marketers – it augments them. It’s brilliant at speeding up research, analysis and content creation. But creativity, strategic thinking and genuine human insight remain difficult to automate. If anything, as AI-generated content becomes more common, authentic perspectives and distinctive ideas become even more valuable.

The bottom line

Brand and demand aren’t opposing strategies. They’re partners. Brand building ensures you’re remembered when buyers eventually enter the market. Demand generation captures that opportunity when they do.

In a world of longer buying cycles, changing decision-makers and AI-powered discovery, being memorable isn’t just a nice marketing objective. It might be your biggest competitive advantage.

What’s your view? Are B2B organisations investing enough in long-term brand building, or are we still too focused on short-term demand?

We know what works. So what's holding B2B back?

B2B Ignite returned to London on 1 July, and the industry is in better shape than it sometimes gives itself credit for. The rooms were full and the conversations were sharp, and credit to the B2B Marketing team for building the programme around exactly the right ambition, marketers taking more control of growth.
